Adaptable AF
In my mind, the thing that makes humans most unique is our endless adaptability. Humans are the only species on Earth to live on all seven continents. As one of my colleagues in PRI Kasia Galica likes to say, humans are adaptable as fuck.
Ultimately our adaptability in our environment originates from and depends on our internal adaptations. Can we fluctuate between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system? Can we be ready to fight or run at a moment’s notice but then switch back into relaxation when the danger has passed? Can we find a state of exhalation as easily as we find a state of inhalation? Can we expand and contract, through our breath, through muscles? What about in the mind? Can we shift between modes of self-reflection and community? I’m reminded of this quote from Deepak Chopra:
“Your entire universe is in your mind and nowhere else. To expand the universe, expand your mind.”
