Prayers Made Out of Grass

This week I placed my feet where ocean meets shore, and it brought to my mind this excerpt from Mary Oliver's poem "Mindful":

"how can you help

but grow wise

with such teachings

as these -

the untrimmable light

of the world,

the ocean's shine,

the prayers that are made

out of grass?"

We have the opportunity to allow every footstep to be a prayer.

But we have to notice the ground we're standing on first. We must be present enough in the soles of our feet to connect to the grass or concrete or shifting sands beneath us. It's how we know where we are, and it's how we know who we are.
