Rules for Life
At the top of my to do list for every day sits a list of rules for how I want to live my life. It’s ever-changing, and I add and subtract as I need different advice for a future self. You might recognize some of them from past newsletters. Here’s what I’ve got right now:
It's not what we have done; it's what we have become in doing.
Slow transitions are really valuable.
Uncertainty is where creation lives.
Hope is created every day.
Is efficiency always what serves you?
There is nothing perfect. There is only life.
You are the grass you need to water.
The story we tell ourselves becomes the world we live in. When I look at this list, I am reminded to slow down, to find value in taking my time and being lost. I am reminded that the majority of life exists in the everyday doing, the practice of living consciously moment to moment, rather than the elevation to achievements. And that ultimately my life and what I choose to do with my short time here is not a decision made lightly.
What do your rules for life look like? What is the story you tell yourself through them and how does it shape the world you live in?
